Quotes

Been scouring the internet for quotes that represent the views of those uneducated on the issue of asylum.

Here's a few of my favorites, all from the Facebook group send all the imargrants home - seriously, if you are going to be peddling hatred against a group of people then learn to spell it properly.

My favorite part being "speke english".

Any way, I'm going to be on the lookout for more quotes like this. If anybody finds any websites or Facebook groups, or other quotes then let me know.

Newspaper headlines

I thought it would be good to find some biased newspaper headlines - as newspapers give an opinion a certain authority. Within ten minutes of thinking this I saw this headline on the front of, you got it, The Mail.

End of Year Show '09

I have been trying to put together an entry for the End of Year Show promo competition. I am not having much luck. Here are some crap pieces of crap.

More mapping

I am going to do more maps. So far I have got two planned that will help me explore Britain relationship withe the rest of the world. This is a half finished map showing all the countries (past and present) that Britian has colonised, and I intend to do another similar map showing countries that British companies source products and materials from.

January highlights

I haven't updated my blog for a month now, so I decided it was high time to do so.

Without further ado here is a run-down, in no particular order, of my January highlights.

1.

Work placement at Thompson. Sweeeet. Well, kind off - I was supposed to do a week, but was ill for Monday and Tuesday so it turned into three days. It was smart to see the people I hadn't seen since summer, as well as the two new guys that had started. Equally as good was seeing the final version of the Metal books - You Are Here.

Going to Amsterdam (for the culture, not the drugs and hookers...) with my lovely girlfriend Cat. This gave me an excuse to get some footage on the 8mm cine camera my sister got me for Christmas (watch this space for a video). Here is a photo of me on a big boat in Amsterdam - and not a space cake in sight.

Speaking to Si Scott. He came into college with Danny Sangra and talked us through some of their work. Both really cool, down to earth guys. The highlight of this highlight was showing Si some of my work and getting the response 'It was you that did that? I've seen that before. It's nice' to the first piece of work that I showed him - one of the outcomes to my last module (below). Psyched!

On Tuesday I started an internship at the Ultimate Holding Company in Manchester, doing 2 days a week. It should be really good, they are involved in the more 'ethical' side of graphic design as well as doing a lot of interesting art projects. Here is my favorite piece of design work by them - poster and flyer artwork for Climate Camp (hopefully I'll be attending the next one of these).

Oh yeah, these also came back from the printers - they may look plain (and they are) - but this was the first time I actually designed a 2 colour print job, so go me.

Direction

After my tutorial the other day I am thinking about the direction that my research is going. Fred was talking about using just statistics to to encourage people to question their prejudices about asylum seekers, as opposed to some kind of traditional advertising campaign.

Sagmeister did something similar (I'm sure you have all seen this, but now you can see it agian), called Moving Money, which I guess illustrates this idea. It was a kind of road show showing facts about militery spending in America, and included stationary, vehicles, inflatable graphs, etc.
