Hmmm...

I'm still looking at 3D images for my own promotion. I've started trying to incorporate type into the images. Get your 3D glasses ready.

I tried making my own 3D images (as opposed to using photos). I figured out that the further to the right the magenta is offset from the cyan, the closer something appears, and the further to the right, the further away.

I tried making the words 'see things more clearly' stand out, but its not very clear...this is the idea that I want to persue because it relies on the 3D glasses to make sense, which makes the concept that much stronger.

We were also thinking of putting on some kind of 3D exhibition, where everyone would have to wear glasses through out the exhibition. I made this as a business card idea, but I want to adapt it for a poster advertising the exhibition (if we have an exhibition). I was thinking that it could be changed to Bring It Alive.

I'm also doing a brief where I have to design Panamax Paracetamol packaging for people with limited vision. Here are some early designs.

A scaled down mock-up of the the first attempt at making the information leaflet. I followed the advice in the Royal National Institute for the Blind's typography for visually impaired people. Because I attached card to the front and back, it 'snaps' open and shut, making it much easier to open and fold up again. There are a few problems that need to ironed out, but this is pretty much the final thing.

In the free graduate guide that came with the latest issue of Creative Review I found an advert for the LCAD End of Year Show.

So basically, someone has taken my design, changed it so it so it doesn't work as well (how did that big blunt pencil underline those words?) and had it printed in a national design magazine... At least I can say that I've had some of my work printed in Creative Review (can I?).

Hmmm...

Fame - I'm gonna live forever

So basically all my hard work has started to pay off, and lately I have been spending most of my time just basically being famous. Here are some reasons why I am HOT and you are NOT.

On May 11th 2008, I officially scored the 21st highest score IN THE WORLD on the Facebook application, Kick-ups. Here I would like to point out that there are over 6 billion people in the world. Here is a screen grab of the score-board that secured my reputation in the international Kick-ups circuit.

I have also appeared in various magazines over the last month.

This is an article in Ride about how I went to a BMX competition. It is pretty hard to see me in some of the photos. The photographer was rubbish and I'm out of focus in some of the pictures, and not even in others (Papps, eh? I don't know.). Here is a blown up image of me from one of the photos. You'll notice as well that its not really the most flattering photograph. It looks like I've got child bearing hips. It's a hard life being a celebrity.

Dig also covered the story. They didn't manage a photo, not even an out of focus one. The writer was keen, however, to tell people about how he met me. And yes that is an iMac keyboard in the background of the photo. Bling.

I also kicked off my modeling career with this photo by Ricky Adam in the photo edition of Juxtapoz. Note also that I'm still good looking, even with my back to the camera.

I still try and find time in my busy life to do a bit of Graphic Design - to give something back, you know? My first proper job came back from the printers yesterday. Its alright, just not as good as being ranked 21st in the world at Kick-Ups. O well.

So yeah, look out for me opening supermarkets in your area.

3D and the like

I have finished the Humane Traffic brief. Here is the updated front cover and screen grabs from InDesign. Ill post pictures when I can find some good double sided stock to print it on.

Me, Cat, Merlin and his Norfolk friend Ryan went to the Media Museum in Bradford. It was pretty good, the best thing however was watching Lions 3D at the IMAX. This lead on to me looking into stereograms -3D images.

I started by trying to make some Magic Eye style autostereograms. Here is the very first one I did, when you focus your eyes behind the image your brain overlaps the repeat patterns, and the difference in distance between the repeats fools your brain into seeing depth. In a nutshell.

Here is a similer thing, but using a photo of some Hyde Park grass (you might have to look pretty close to the screen):

And a slight variation, using one repeat pattern but making it closer together using the warp tool on Photoshop, to create a nice 'bulge'.

Here, I tried to make an exclamation mark. It kind of works but needs a bit more work.

I am still experimenting with making more complex shapes (with out using 3D software because that would be cheating)

I have also started playing around with 3D photos. Get some 3D glasses and look at these

If you haven't got a pair of 3D glasses to hand (then why not...?), you will just have to believe me that they look quite good.

It is just 2 pictures taken 5cm apart and layed over each other on diffent colour channels. These only work in RGB, but I am experimenting with making CMYK versions so that they will work when digitally printed.

I think thats all.

Cya round, like a circle.

302 Briefs

I have pretty much finished the Dig for Sanity posters. I'm pretty pleased with them. There is a possability that they could be used in the Isle of Man to promote allotments, but we'll have to wait and see.

This is the logo I made.

I want to change it at some point because it looks quite sinister. It could be for a Goth band or something........

So yeah, I should probably do something about that.

That brief was the first out of 3 briefs that we had to choose ourself. I have just started the second one - Orphans for Sale, which is an Oxfam brief about promoting international orphan adoption. I wasn't sure whether I think that adopting orphans from other countries is a good thing or not. Surly the amount of money it would cost could be put to better use to help the whole community, and if a couple really want to adopt they can do it without having to bring a small child into a community that is alien to them. But I came to the conclusion that conditions of orphans in some places is so desperate that doing anything is helpful. So.....

Here is the working front of what would a small 148mm x 148mm leaflet that folds out to 148mm x 445mm.

I got one of Frost's books - *Sorry Trees - out of the library t'other week. Its brilliant. I think that I had this leaflet for the Give & Take Exhibition on my mind when I was making mine.

I got Simon (www.merlinmason.co.uk/simonwhitlock) to send me one of his photos of a child living on a land fill site, that I think he took in Vietnam. He has some really nice photos, you should check out his 'mini-site'.

I think that this will go on the back of the leaflet. In total there will be 6 'pages' (3 on each side). After the front, and the back, there will be 4 'pages' left. On these pages I will put the sections What, Why, Where and How.

Anyways, thats about it.

Blog? Oh yeah....

I haven't posted anything since before easter. Sorry. I have been a busy boy.

The End of Year Show stuff went to print yesterday. I have learned a lot from doing this. The first being: learn how to use InDesign properly. I couldn't really be bothered with InDesign, so I made a grid, screengrabbed it and opened it in Photoshop. I'm glad I'm not the one who had to give it to the printer. So yeah, don't make layouts in Photoshop. I have also learned the definition of 'graphic designer', it means 'the person that does the work, but makes no decisions'. The final thing that went to print changed so much (against my will). It was 'designed by committee' and I'm not very pleased with the final outcomes - especially when an hour before the deadline I was told that the Advertising tutor thought that the College logo shouldn't go in the bottom corner, it should be made to look like it is part of the pencil. I guess thats why he does advertising, not Graphics.....

Anyway, ranting aside, I'm getting £500 and it was a good experience.

Here are the final pieces:

On Monday me and Claire had our business studies pitch. It seemed to go OK. Ill add a photo of the business card next week, but for the time being here is the logo of our fictional design agency:

But yeah, I don't want to talk about business studies (sorry, 'enterprise and innovation'), because its boring and I'm glad its over with.

I handed my essay in last week. Again I'm glad to be shot of it. It is called The Responsibility of the Graphic Designer. Click here to read it.

At the minute I'm working on (re)designing an identity for myself. This will include redoing my website (to view the half a website that I made click here ). I want it to be primarily type based, but I am finding it really difficult. Here are of couple of things that I have done so far:

As you can see none of them are amazing. I need to find a solid concept, instead of just trying to make a layout. I want to try and use woodblock type to construct the last one, to see how that comes out. I also tried using embossing to make a business card, I feel that this type of thing is more interesting, and maybe works better.

It is double sided, so that Kyle Bibby is the right way on one side, and Graphic Design is the right way round on the other.

I'm also doing a week long brief, called Dig for Sanity that is about promoting allotments. Here are a few initial ideas.

My two favorite ideas are its all me (the bottom one), and the first one. Throw in the trowel would be a set of three, the other two strap lines being peas and quiet, and thyme out.

I have being trying to design a logo for the dig for sanity campaign.

At first I tried to incorporate the term green fingers into the logo, by using green finger prints, but I think that it has more crime/horror connotations.

I tried using a spade in the logo, but I don't really like it. Heres a few examples:

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. Me and Claire got our D&AD entry finished. We decided to ditch The Rumour Mill, and advertise the BBC, as well as simplifying out idea down, by making just 3 adhesive posters. The word LIE is cut out of each poster so that you can 'see through the lies'...

I'm not sure why grey boxes are appearing at the top of some of my images...

Anyways, apologies for merging four or five posts into one. I'm sure that there is loads that I've forgotten

Until next time
